On this day: In 1797 Nelson received the wound that led to the loss of his right arm in an unsuccesful assult on Santa Cruz de Tenerife. And in 1883 Matthew Webb, the first man to swim the English Channel, was drowned attempting to swim the rapids below Niagara Falls.
Born today: Amelia Earhart (1898-1937), the American aviatrix who was the first woman to cross the Atlantic in an aeroplane. And Alexandre Dumas (1802-70), the French novelist especially remembered for 'The Three Musketeers'.
